As week 3 draws to a close, and we look forward to less than 2 weeks remaining out on the water, we are sure not to forget how lucky we are and how important this work is. We are officially the first cruise to collect data from every station between 40N and 50N. That has never been accomplished before! We have lucked out with "wonderful" weather these last few days and we made the most of it. Now, let me just let you know what "wonderful" weather means in the middle of the North Pacific storm track. We have maintained winds under 15 knots and swells less than 10 feet- It really is quite amazing. Don't fool yourself though- air temperatures are still well below 50F and I can't tell you the last time I saw the sun. It's just gray, gray, gray when you look out.
Since my last post was very science-y I wanted to give you guys a game on this post. Now, if you are not familiar with oceanography you may not get many of these correct, but try your best at matching the container used by the samplers for various measurements. If nothing else, I hope you enjoy the diversity of receptacles used onboard!

Good luck! Those of you who visited me at Friday Harbor will definitely have an advantage at this game. I'll post the answers below in a comment.
Also on the docket for this week is Cup Decorating! We decorate Styrofoam cups, then next week we will put them in a big laundry bag and tie them to the rosette when it is going down to depth. The cups shrink and you end up with a cool souvenir. Everyone has been busy decorating their cups- the talent on board this ship, both scientists and crew, is astounding. I am definitely not the most creative or artistic person out there, but here are 2 of my creations...
